Kansas Motorcycle License Changes in 2024

Written Test Required for Motorcycle Instruction

Effective 2024, Kansas residents will be required to pass a written test before receiving a motorcycle instruction permit.

To obtain a motorcycle license in Kansas, individuals must undergo a two-step process. The first step involves obtaining a motorcycle instruction permit by passing a written test. Once the permit is acquired, applicants must practice riding a motorcycle for a minimum of 14 days and log at least 10 hours of supervised riding time.

The written test covers motorcycle-specific knowledge and safety practices. The Kansas Department of Transportation provides a motorcycle operator's manual that serves as the primary study material for the exam.

To prepare for the test, applicants can study the manual independently or enroll in a motorcycle safety course. Courses are offered by various organizations, including the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
